COASTAL GROUND & SHORELINE PERFORMANCE
Coastal Geotechnical Monitoring Singapore
Monitoring concepts for Singapore shorelines, seawalls and coastal construction, covering settlement, groundwater, pore pressure, slope behaviour and structural movement.
SINGAPORE APPLICATION
Monitoring designed around the real engineering risk
Coastal works often occupy reclaimed or marine-influenced ground, with soft sediment, tidal variations and exposure to changing water levels. Monitoring must distinguish construction response from tide-driven or seasonal behaviour, while considering corrosion, accessibility and instrument survival.
WHERE RISKS ARISE
Project situations that change the monitoring strategy
Each work front poses different ground, structural and operational interfaces. The observations must be chosen for the movement or performance mechanism under review.
Seawall and shoreline protection
Assess crest movement, wall displacement, foundation response and erosion-related changes.
Coastal embankments
Observe settlement, pore pressure and slope response during staged construction.
Nearshore foundations
Monitor local ground and structural movement at exposed or tidal locations.
Coastal adaptation programmes
Plan baseline and follow-up measurements around protection works and adjacent assets.
INSTRUMENTATION
What to measure, and why
The following are engineering options, not a fixed instrument schedule. Final selection depends on design, available access, baseline conditions and the necessary measurement accuracy.
| Engineering parameter | Possible instrumentation | Interpretation priority |
|---|---|---|
| Settlement and consolidation | Settlement plates, levelling and gauges | Follow staged fill response and long-term residual movement. |
| Pore pressure | Vibrating-wire piezometers | Measure excess pressure in relevant soil horizons during loading. |
| Lateral deformation | Inclinometers and surface survey | Assess lateral response of embankments or retaining elements. |
| Coastal structure movement | Prisms, tilt sensors and displacement gauges | Track selected walls, decks or structural joints where access permits. |
| Water-level context | Tide and groundwater measurements | Avoid misinterpreting normal tidal variation as construction response. |
ENGINEERING JUDGEMENT
Measurements that should not be confused
Similar-looking datasets can answer different engineering questions. Monitoring quality starts with a clear definition of what the instrument actually measures.
Tidal water level vs pore pressure
External tide stage is not the same as pore-water pressure within a soil layer.
Settlement plate vs prism
Plates target settlement of fill or underlying strata; survey prisms observe a selected visible point.
Short-term alerts vs long-term trend
Construction-stage response and post-construction residual settlement need different measurement frequencies.
EXECUTION
A practical sequence from baseline to review
Effective programmes connect field installation, measurement traceability and construction activities. These considerations should be settled before the highest-risk works begin.
- Identify exposure class, tidal windows and safe access methods before specifying sensors or cable routes.
- Set monitoring benchmarks outside actively moving reclaimed ground where practicable.
- Separate installation-stage and operational-stage monitoring in the handover records.
- Reference groundwater and tidal conditions during trend review; measure only the quantities needed for decisions.
OFFICIAL SINGAPORE CONTEXT
Relevant public guidance and project context
PUB states that protection plans are being tailored to different coastline segments through site-specific studies. The published programme includes City–East Coast and other stretches, demonstrating that monitoring strategies must be adapted to local ground and protection options.
