RAIL INTERFACES & UNDERGROUND CONSTRUCTION
MRT & Metro Geotechnical Monitoring Singapore
Instrumentation and monitoring support for Singapore MRT, tunnels, stations and nearby works, covering ground movement, settlement, groundwater and rail-adjacent assets.
SINGAPORE APPLICATION
Monitoring designed around the real engineering risk
Metro construction combines tunnel drives, station boxes, shafts and crossings beneath active roads and buildings. Existing railway assets introduce separate protection requirements. Instrumentation is most effective when it is aligned with tunnel position, excavation stage and defined receptors.
WHERE RISKS ARISE
Project situations that change the monitoring strategy
Each work front poses different ground, structural and operational interfaces. The observations must be chosen for the movement or performance mechanism under review.
Tunnel boring
Track settlement troughs, ground response and selected structural receptors as the face advances.
Station excavation
Review ERSS movement, strut forces, basal conditions and groundwater changes.
Adjacent live railway
Coordinate monitoring and permissions for works in the appropriate protection zones.
Cross passages and shafts
Increase relevant observations during short-duration excavation and support changes.
INSTRUMENTATION
What to measure, and why
The following are engineering options, not a fixed instrument schedule. Final selection depends on design, available access, baseline conditions and the necessary measurement accuracy.
| Engineering parameter | Possible instrumentation | Interpretation priority |
|---|---|---|
| Ground settlement | Precise levelling, settlement markers and survey prisms | Interpret movement relative to tunnel advance and surface receptors. |
| Wall movement | Inclinometers and automated arrays | Review station box or shaft retaining systems by construction stage. |
| Support load | Load cells or strain gauges | Check load changes alongside installation and excavation sequence. |
| Water pressure | Piezometers and observation wells | Evaluate dewatering and permeability-related changes. |
| Track and asset response | ATS/prisms and selected structural instruments | Coordinate with railway asset protection requirements and stable reference control. |
ENGINEERING JUDGEMENT
Measurements that should not be confused
Similar-looking datasets can answer different engineering questions. Monitoring quality starts with a clear definition of what the instrument actually measures.
ATS vs manual survey
ATS suits frequent repetitive prism readings when line of sight and environmental conditions permit; manual surveys provide periodic independent checks.
Surface settlement vs tunnel convergence
Surface levelling does not directly measure internal lining convergence; instrument selection depends on the mechanism.
Fixed monitoring frequency vs trigger-based frequency
Critical construction stages may justify more frequent readings and agreed escalation responses.
EXECUTION
A practical sequence from baseline to review
Effective programmes connect field installation, measurement traceability and construction activities. These considerations should be settled before the highest-risk works begin.
- Review alignment, depth, ground model, face progress and protected assets before selecting the monitoring envelope.
- Establish baselines well before tunnelling or excavation begins, including for existing railway structures.
- Link monitoring data to face position, ring build, groundwater changes and construction activities.
- Confirm latest railway protection requirements and formal approvals with the appointed parties before works commence.
OFFICIAL SINGAPORE CONTEXT
Relevant public guidance and project context
LTA publishes a Code of Practice for Railway Protection and a September 2026 addendum on developments near compressible soils affecting RTS tunnels. LTA also publicly describes monitoring and risk management for Cross Island Line tunnelling. These are sector references, not GEOUE project claims.
GEOUE ENGINEERING SUPPORT
A coordinated monitoring package for your project
GEOUE supports instrumentation review, instrument selection and supply, installation coordination, baseline records, manual or automated data workflows, QA/QC, trend assessment and engineering reporting for relevant Singapore works. Field execution and contracting are arranged according to scope and appropriate local resources.
Risk and scope review
Discuss sensitive receptors, specification, construction sequence, measurement objectives, access and reporting responsibilities.
Traceable field monitoring
Coordinate installation records, baseline checks, monitoring logs, data validity review and agreed notification procedures.
Engineering-ready outputs
Organise trends, exceptions and progress-stage context for review by the responsible engineering team.
